Random Thoughts: Rumors vs Facts

Vernon Gholston takes downs off - This has to be one of the most ridicules rumors started by a “Scout” that I have ever heard.  When there is a report that starts with “some scouts are saying” that means it’s a planted story.  It might have some half truths to entice you into thinking it has some meaning but the true meaning of the leak is to manipulate the person reporting the story.  Vernon this year had 15 tackles for losses and 14 sacks.  That is a total of 29 plays behind the line of scrimmage.  A blind scout touching the TV screen could feel the intensity of this kids play on the field!  I think the people repeating this rumor are eating way too much road kill!

Chris Long is a tweener - Again one of the most ridicules reports to come to my ears in years.  Chris Long is a strong side DE in a 4/3 defense and will be a good one.  A tweener does not have a true position.  Again a report started by a “scout” to manipulate the announcer who is reporting it.

Jonathan Stewart is rising on team’s draft boards - Jonathan never dropped.  His surgery was recommended by all the teams interested in drafting him after he ran a 4.45 sp at the combine.  He has always been rated as a top fifteen pick in the draft.

Jake Long might not be a true LT - Why would this be considered a reason not to draft Jake in the top five or as the first pick in the draft?   I think being able to use Jake as a LT, RT or LG is a positive not a negative.  In most systems he will be an excellent LT.  In a spread offense he will struggle as a LT.  I don’t see a spread offense until the Patriots pick in this draft and I bet if he drops to them they would lay a big fat kiss on the lips of Eric Mangini and draft him.

Matt Ryan is not a franchise QB - At least everybody reporting on the draft has been consistent with this false rumor.   The truth is that if Matt were not a franchise QB then teams in the top ten like Miami, Chiefs, Jets, Ravens would not be interested in him.  Not one of those teams has officially ruled out drafting Matt!  QB’s are rated on need and then talent.  Boston College would not have taken a sniff of a bowl game if it weren’t for Matt Ryan.

Darren McFadden is not that good a RB - He is long legged and long legged RB’s do not run that same way that regular sized RB’s run.  They do not run through tackles.  They run by them.  They make their cuts a yard earlier than a regular RB because their long stride takes them into a tackler faster so they cut early and go bye the tackler with a powerful stride and speed.  Darren McFadden reminds me of what I remember of Gayle Sayers and OJ Simpson.  That is the style of back that he is and that is his potential.  He is not the same style of runner that Adrian Peterson is.  I just wish the “experts” on TV would stop trying to compare the two players.  These two players have completely different styles of running.  Right now there is no back in the NFL that runs with the same style that Darren runs with.

I can’t let that statement unchallenged. If your opinion is based on looking at hours and hours of films, (not highlight films off of U-tube) then yes I will say that your opinion about a player is as valid as mine. But I just bet that your opinion is not based on hours and hours of film study. It’s based on what you have read or heard from friends and sites and regurgitated over and over again until it becomes the average draft persons thought process about a player. Sometimes people will contact me on a player they have seen personally for that last couple of years who’s profile I have written that they disagree with me on because they think they know that player better then me. Understand that for the first time with me you will be getting an unbiased opinion of that player. It may not be want you want to hear or agree with but it is an honest opinion based of film study and not just thrown out there for the hell of it. I see “experts” all the time talk about a player from highlight films and regurgitate what a scout has told them or a GM has told them to prove a point positive or negative. In most cases I just shake my head. I’m not right about all the players I profile and I say all the time that you should all use my profiles as a tool to form your own opinions – but my opinions are based on hours and hours of film work and they are my own and I think that’s the most important aspect of each and every profile that I do. So – Mr. Anonymous unless you form your own opinions on players from hours and hours of game film study I will say to you that Yes, my opinion is more valid then yours or anybody else’s who does not watch the amount of college games and college game films that I do. I put my profiles and opinions of players up against anybodies out there except for a scout who has done more work then I have done to evaluate a player. My opinion of a player is more valid then yours. I say that not to brag. I say that out of pride and the amount of work I put into each and every profile. I am not always right about a players potential to play at the NFL level but dam it - I am valid.

I was watching Gale Sayers vids earlier. I saw him as a kid and
I still think he is the best. McFadden just might be a bigger Sayers. I could never explain to anyone why Sayers was unreal. Instant downhill top speed with the ability to cut on a dime after 3 fakes on previous dimes, perhaps? If Peterson is 4/5’s Dickerson, then McFadden being 2/3 rds Sayers might be something
at least as good if not better. I think the author’s views on the
long strides might be on target more than anyone I have yet to read…

One thats been going around you overlooked was ever since A. Cason decided not to run at his Pro Day a year ago, (Why should he, he was coming back to school) the assumption that hes ‘too slow’ has been run up and down the flagpole to the point that many ‘experts’ have him rated as a 2nd rounder based simply on this idea. The facts that he was a star on the UA track team, had explosive numbers at the combine, and is a proven playmaker with extensive starting experience all have taken a back seat to the idea that “He must have been afraid to run.”

    BD,
A very good point. A. Cason might be one of the most under valued DB’s in this draft. All because of rumors that have no facts to back them up. The facts and the film give you a different picture of his talent then the rumors suggest.
