Random Thoughts

1. Can someone tell me why ESPN is reporting on the 21-year old kid who was put in jail for 2 years for having oral sex?  Is oral sex a sport now?!  I know according to Bill Clinton that it’s not really sex.  I also know that Hillary Clinton doesn’t consider oral sex cheating on your spouse.  But, please tell me that oral sex is not part of the draft, or it has its own league, or…I have to stop now or I’ll get into trouble.  ESPN, please just report on sports…I’m begging you!

2. I think that at some point, teams have to realize that when evaluating a player for the QB position in the NFL, the Wonderlic test is an important part of the total evaluation.  The QB’s that have excellent athletic talent and high IQ’s are in the Hall of Fame.  The QB’s that do not have great athletic talent, but high IQ’s have very good careers and some make it into the HOF.  The QB’s with excellent athletic talent and low IQ’s fail.  Those are the facts!  I guess there are exceptions, but when it comes to the QB position, why take a chance on drafting an exception?  It’s like betting against the house and thinking you are going to win more than you’re going to lose.

The Super Bowl vs The BCS Championship

Posted by thehuddlereport.com on October 28, 2007

How many times have you heard this statement? “I watch the Super Bowl only for the commercials.”  What Super Bowl replays get more air time: football plays or the slick commercials?  I suspect you know the answer.  Super Bowl parties are not interrupted by good football games.

When you watch the BCS Championship game, you watch the game.  Why?  Because the game is a competition between teams that have been closely matched by their performance during the season.  Does the Super Bowl match two of the best teams as demonstrated by their performance during the season?  My answer is “Rarely!”

Glenn Dorsey – First pick of the Draft? I Don’t Think So!

With the trade of Chris Chambers, it looks like the Dolphins are moving on to next season.  They have decided to build for the future with Ronnie Brown, Ted Ginn, and, I would guess, John Beck on offense, which is not a bad idea.  The Miami defense needs a lot of players to improve because of old age and lack of talent.  However, if you build around the offense and add a few offensive linemen, you can make a defense better quickly simply by scoring more points.  Some so-called experts are suggesting that if Miami has the first pick of the 2008 draft, they should select Glenn Dorsey (DT – LSU).  I think there are better options that would improve the offense and make the Dolphins more competitive right away.  The Dolphins need defensive players, but picking a DT early in a draft is a very risky pick as the history of the draft has shown us.  Glenn Dorsey does project to be a good player.  But the facts suggest that DT’s do not impact as much at the pro level as they have at the college level.  Playing DT in a 4-3 defense is grunt work.  A DT in a 4-3 defense has to make plays in the running game and in the passing game to be considered an impact player.  You can rotate players and get that type of impact.  Glenn Dorsey is good player who shows some leadership and has the ability to play in any type of defensive system; but, the truth is that it will take time for him to impact and he will, in most cases, be rotated; therefore, paying first pick money makes no sense to me.

2008 Free Agent QB Update

Posted by thehuddlereport.com on October 1, 2007

by Aaron Freeman

Okay, the inevitable occurred and Rex Grossman was benched. And despite a poor showing from Brian Griese this past week, it does not seem likely he’ll regain his job soon. We may have seen him play in his last game as a Bear, and it won’t be too great a leap that it was also his last game as an NFL starter.

Sure, Grossman might get a chance with another team and fill in as an injury replacement, but I’m not sure Grossman will ever get the opportunity to enter a season as a starter with another NFL team.
